Northeim Lake District
The Northeim Lake District consists right now of 12 artificial lakes and was created by gravel mining.

The 'Northeimer Lake District' created by gravel mining stretches over an area of roughly 360ha and consists of of 12 artificial lakes right now. At least three will follow. The area of the Lake District were different after uses allocated through the countryside frame programme and several land development plans with green structures plans.
The project definition by further gravel mining is the re-naturalisation and redesign of the landscape, which was changed fundamentally through the raw material extraction. The overall plan is based on the proven planing concept of interlinking nature and leisure activities by Prof. Hedergott from the year 1958. Apart from the designated areas for extraction there is a classification, which is dedicated to leisure activities, to nature protection and fish farming. The water surface of the largest lake, which will stretch on ca 160ha and brings the lake nearer to the city. Already today there are diverse possibilities like hiking, swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and angling. The naturalist visitor has the option to discover the unique 'water bird reserve Northeim lake district' as protected habitat for flora and fauna. Right now it consists of three lake, later of four.
The lake district is an important part of the Northeim culture and leisure life already. On the occasion of international sports competitions, sailing and surf regattas, thousands of visitors arrive here from near and afar to enjoy the lake and town.
Extensive sunbathing lawns are available to swimming visitors at the gravel lake. There is also a special sign-posted swimming spot and changing rooms. The eight residential clubs concentrate on sailing, surfing, angling, water rescue and ships model sailing: Angelsportverein Northeim e.V., Northeimer Wind-Surfing-Club e.V., Northeimer Segelclub e.V., Segelgemeinschaft Northeim e.V., Windsurfing Klub Südniedersachsen e.V., Schiffsmodellbauclub Northeim e.V., SSP private jetty leasing, DLRG local group Northeim.
There is a special dedicated windsurfing beach, which can be easily reached from the parking area Nordhafen. the restaurant 'Seeterrassen' offers a peddle boat hire since summer 2010.

In the leisure area there are numerous offers like hiking, swimming, sailing, surfing, diving and angling.
